TikTok has intensified its efforts to eliminate offensive content globally, including in Nigeria.
In the first quarter of 2025, the company removed over 3.6 million videos uploaded by Nigerian users for violating its content guidelines. Globally, 211 million videos were taken down during the same period. Traditional Nigerian cuisine
This data comes from TikTok’s Q1 2025 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, which emphasizes the platform’s commitment to fostering a safe, respectful, and trustworthy digital space.
The 3.6 million removals from Nigeria reflect a 50% increase from the previous quarter, when 2.4 million videos were taken down. TikTok reported a proactive detection rate of 98.4%, meaning most of the content was removed before users could report it. Additionally, 92.1% of videos were removed within 24 hours of being posted.
In March 2025, TikTok also removed 129 West African accounts linked to covert activities. Globally, the 211 million videos removed in Q1 marked a rise from the 153 million removed in the previous quarter.
The platform’s proactive detection rate globally reached 99%, indicating improvements in identifying and eliminating harmful content quickly.
Between January and March 2025, TikTok also deleted 44.7 million spam comments from fake accounts and removed 4.3 billion fake likes. These inauthentic engagements were traced to automated systems or bots designed to manipulate platform activity.
TikTok stated: “We remain vigilant in our efforts to detect external threats and safeguard the platform from fake accounts and engagement… We are steadfast in our commitment to promptly identify and remove any accounts, content, or activities that seek to artificially boost popularity.”
Regarding TikTok LIVE, the platform has reinforced its Monetization Guidelines to clarify what content is eligible for earning revenue. Enforcement of LIVE content policies remains a top priority. In Q1 2025, TikTok banned 42,196 LIVE rooms and interrupted 48,156 streams in Nigeria due to community guideline violations.
